Why Israel for Cleantech?
Israel’s entrepreneurial culture and technical expertise make it a natural hub for cleantech innovation. Israel was ranked 2nd in the world in the 2012 Global Innovation Index for its innovation capacity.
Israel’s cleantech innovation ecosystem consists of approximately 400 companies, and world-class research institutions. Early-stage companies are supported by a dynamic technology incubator base, supportive government policy and a strong investment community. Israeli businesses are internationally oriented, with a small local market driving companies to look beyond their borders as a source of growth. Israel has particular technological expertise in the following fields:
Water & Agriculture - Israel is regarded as a global centre of water and agriculture innovation, having benefited from decades of experience in harnessing the power of technology to overcome water scarcity. In particular, drip irrigation, desalination, wastewater treatment, IT solutions for asset management, turnkey water management solutions, precision farming, and agri-biotechnology are innovation areas of strength in Israel.
Low carbon energy - Israel is heavily investing in developing alternative fuel solutions for transport. The Israeli government’s 10-year $400m Oil Free Initiative seeks to reduce Israel’s dependence on oil for transport by 60% by 2025. On the renewables front, solar energy has been a traditional area of strength. There is also a growing cluster of smart energy companies supported by the Israel Smart Energy Association.
